How to respond effectively and gently to an opposing argument

I have observed when I do a debate with someone, I tend do take the counter argument in a negative way, which results to a hyper reactive response even if I know I am wrong or doesn't make any sense.

When I reflect, then I get to know I could have responded better. But it doesn't matter, you should have think of it while arguing and not after that, so make sure you are alert mode.

Is it a natural human nature? or is it me who takes it offensively. IDK

Why it happens to me? I love to argue or debate. I think it could be because I want to be right, which I can't be every time. Make sure I should don't respond when I am unsure about a certain topic/argument/opinion.

ChatGPT's opinion

When some loses an argument usually its "If I'm wrong, I lose something about myself." Here something refers to

  1. Intelligence
  2. Loosing
  3. Respect
  4. Self Worth

Who the fuck I am right now? The most intelligent man on the planet. no, right? then why to care even if you loose any argument.

When and How should I respond?

  1. Take a pause and start the sentence calmly
  2. Start with 'I think', 'In my opinion', 'My perspective is', 'I believe'
  3. Respond only if you have some opinions about the conversation.
  • When you are sure and already had thought about it, then respond with confidence, why you think, evidences, etc
  • When unsure and have some sort of idea, then respond in a way that doesn't look like you know the answer. Be curious and ask for why the other person thinks that.
  • When no idea about the topic, then just shut your mouth and listen to the conversation, but if want to participate then ask questions.

Please be aware when you put your opinions out there. You are there to learn, not to win.
